I know Christmas is almost here, but I wanted to do one last craft post before the big day arrives! These adorable little guys spent way too much time enjoying all of the sunshine we’ve been getting down here but even melted, they’re awfully cute!
Here’s what you’ll need to make one of these ornaments for yourself:
- Clear plastic or glass ornament – you can buy these at most craft stores around the holidays
- 1/4 to 1/3 cup sugar or salt
- 2 – 3 T white glitter
- funnel that fits your ornament opening
- toothpick
- whole allspice or peppercorns
- black and orange paint
- felt (any color)
- glue
- ribbon
- First, wash the outside of your ornament to make sure it looks all nice and shiny! If you have time, you might wash the inside too, but you’ll have to let it dry 100% before you can do the next step so I’d recommend doing it a few hours before.
- Pick out two large whole allspice peppercorns for the eyes and four smaller ones for the buttons or smile. Using the black paint (and some patience) paint the allspice so that it looks like coal. You could probably skip this step, but I think they look a lot better painted black.
- Cut the the toothpick to make the nose–I like mine longer, so I did mine about 3/4 inch long. Don’t make it too short, though, or you’ll lose it in the snow! Paint it orange.
- Cut a strip of felt to make the ‘scarf’ and cut slits in the end for a fringe. I did my scarves about 1/2 inch wide and about 4 inches long, but that’s personal preference.
- Mix the white glitter with the sugar to make the ‘snow.’ I have seen other people use coarse or fine salt instead of sugar, but I had a lot of sugar so that’s what I used. If you don’t have glitter, you could skip this step, but the glitter will make the ornament really sparkle!
- Using the funnel, add your ‘snow’ to the ornament.
- Add the allspice, the toothpick nose and the scarf to the ornament. Shake gently to help the scarf settle. If the snowman eyes get buried under the snow, just shake it gently and they should come back to the top.
- Reattach the top and use a very small amount of superglue to make sure it stays on. Be careful! If you add too much glue or jostle the ornament before it’s 100% dry, the glue will run down the inside of the ornament, and your snow will stick to it and look messy.
- Tie the ribbon in a bow at the top of the loop to make it look pretty!
- Hang on the tree and enjoy or give as a gift.
